Methyl isocyanate is prepared, in a yield of up to 92 to 97% and about 98% purity, by reacting one mole of a cyanate of an alkali metal and/or an alkaline earth metal present in an organic diluent with 0.5 to 3 moles of a methyl halide for a contact time of one to four minutes, and continuously withdrawing the resulting methyl isocyanate from the reactants. The molar ratio of the diluent to the methyl halide is 3 to 5:1. |
