A carbon bearing material (CO, CO2 or mixtures thereof) is hydrogenated to methane in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a metallic mesh type core, having a Raney metal exterior surface derived from a NixM1-xAl3 beta structured crystalline precursory layer (M being a catalyst enhancer e.g. molybdenum, titanium tantalum or ruthenium; x: 0,80-0,95).
