PURPOSE:To obtain a positive type color liq. crystal display element with high contrast by forming a heat generating resistor on at least one of vertically oriented substrates and by sealing a specified liq. crystal composition in the gap between both the substrates. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal composition which assumes a smectic A phase (or a hexagonal smectic B phase) and is colorless in the early state is used. By heating the composition, said phase is converted into an isotropic liq. phase, and the composition is colored. By cooling the composition in the state of the isotropic liq. phase (or a nematic phase) while applying an electric field, a random A phase (or a hexagonal smectic B phase) is formed, and the colored state is held. The composition consisting of liq. crystal molecules 3 and a dichroic coloring matter 4 is sealed in the gap between a substrate 1 having a transparent electrode 5 and a substrate 2 having an electrode 6 which doubles as a heat generating resistor to obtain a color liq. crystal display element. |
