A differential thermal expansion device comprising a narrow strip of two dissimilar materials having different co-efficients of thermal expansion and an applied flexible resistive electrical conductor which, when activiated by an electric potential, will cause dissimilar expansion. The device can be used as a coil in an electrical measuring instrument which can be calibrated in a number of ways. The invention also consists in a method of manufacture of the device.
