The invention relates to the field of metallurgy and is applicable to the drawing of, in particular, wire and rods. With the aid of the invention, the technological and material costs in multi-stage drawing are reduced. The object on which the invention is based is to design the process in such a way that a high degree of total deformation can be achieved while avoiding lubricant coatings between the stages and plastics as the lubricant. This object is achieved according to the invention in that an adhesive, homogeneous, solid metal stearate film with a thickness of greater than 3 mu m is applied to the material before the first drawing stage, and in that the material coated with this film is drawn at an initial speed of greater than 2 m/s and with high degrees of individual deformation greater than 35% up to a degree of total deformation corresponding to that which is generally customary between two annealings.
