The engine of a motor vehicle can be automatically switched off by means of an engine control system if a predetermined engine shut-off condition is detected during normal driving operation and can be automatically re-started after a predetermined engine restart condition has been detected. The engine is shut off if a parking brake is actuated and it is restarted if the parking brake is released before the vehicle starts up. The engine control system contains a parking brake detector (24) in order to detect when a parking brake is put on, and an engine shut-off actuation element (30) which responds to a parking brake detector signal (S2, S3, S4, S5) in order to switch off the engine. The control system also contains a parking brake release detector (42). An engine restart actuation element (64) responds to the parking brake release signal (S9, S13, S14, S15, S19) when the parking brake is released in order to restart the engine. <IMAGE>
