PURPOSE:To prepare phenol, in high selectivity, without producing by-product, by the direct oxidation of benzene with an oxidizing agent capable of generating oxygen anion radical which is a highly reactive oxygen, in the presence of an oxidation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is prepared by oxidizing benzene at high temperature, especially at 450-650 deg.C in vapor phase, with an oxidizing agent capable of easily generating oxygen anion radical, in the presence of an oxidation catalyst comprising one or more oxides of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten and chromium. The oxidizing agent capable of generating oxygen anion radical is e.g. dinitrogen monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, etc., and its amount is 0.05-10mol, preferably 0.5-5mol per 1mol of benzene. Preferably, the reaction system contains steam, and the amount of steam is 0.05-10mol, preferably 1-5mol per 1mol of benzene. |
