In the process, the waste water is treated with gas in an activation tank in the presence of activated sludge for the degradation of organic hydrocarbon compounds and for the uptake of phosphate by microorganisms present in the activated sludge, the waste water/activated sludge mixture is withdrawn from the activation tank and fractionated in a secondary sedimentation to give a purified, essentially phosphate-free water and phosphate-containing sludge; a device for carrying out the process is also described. A part-stream is branched off from the waste water/activated sludge mixture leaving the activation tank and is subjected to an anaerobic phosphate elimination. At least part of the low-phosphate sludge produced from the phosphate elimination is returned into the activation tank, while the phosphate-enriched liquid is further treated.
