The patent application relates to a novel drive unit which operates on the principle of the heat pump. In contrast to conventional heat pumps, the gas CO2, which is compressed in a compressor driven by an internal combustion engine, is used as the drive medium for the transmission device (engine) itself. The gas CO2 makes it possible to employ pressures of approximately 100 bar, with the result that the dimensions of the drive motor itself can be small. A phase change from the gaseous to the liquid phase is not absolutely necessary in the case of the gas CO2. The power of the internal combustion engine for driving the compressor is only of the order of magnitude of 25 % of conventional internal combustion engines in automobiles for the same output power. The consumption of petrol or diesel is therefore also only of the order of magnitude of 25 % compared with conventional engineering.
