In the case of a two-stroke diesel engine with opposing free pistons (2) and hydraulic pump (3), the reciprocating movement of the free pistons through the hydraulic oil or water delivered by the hydraulic pump is translated into rotational movement by a hydraulic motor or a free jet turbine. On the return of the free pistons acceleration occurs largely due to the air compressed in the buffer chambers of the free pistons. Each cylinder has an injection pump (10). Tangential injection into the cylinder results in good mixing and complete combustion in the air charge rotating in the same direction. The injection pump connected to the compression chamber by a short duct is also connected to the starter injection pump and to the starter pneumatic valve. In the case of automatic control of the injection quantity by the delivery pressure of the hydraulic pump, the cylinder is actuated by an actuating rod (18), which acts on the fuel pumps and on the starter pneumatic valves. <IMAGE>
