In a CCITT-recommended data flow of 34.368 Mbit/s of a non-hierarchical multiplex system, not only 48 sound broadcast signals, each coded with 14 bits, and the signals required by the system are to be transmitted, but, in addition, channel-individual information providing signalling for voice/music, stereo/mono, traffic broadcasts, transmitter identification, time, programme identification etc., should also be transmittable. For this purpose, 50 time slots (Z1 to Z50), each comprising 21 bits with an additional 2 x 12 bits for synchronisation and signalling, are interleaved according to the invention to form a pulse frame of 1074 bits. Through this division of the pulse frame, the high clock frequency is divisible by three. As a result, low-power-consumption integrated circuits and read-only memories (PROM) can be used to the maximum extent to generate the signals required for multiplex formation. In each time slot, 6 bits are provided for channel-individual information transmission and a parity bit for protection of the 7 or 8 most significant bits of the sound broadcast signals. Two time slots are available as service and test channels. <IMAGE>
