In cover devices for the guideways of machine tools, which cover devices consist of boxes which slide telescopically one into the other, preferably made of steel sheet, the aim is to keep the individual boxes as short as possible in the extension direction, because the length of the cover device in the pushed-together state covers a part of the guideway which only serves to accommodate the cover device and can no longer be occupied by the slide of the machine tool. But there are limits with regard to reducing the width of the boxes, below which limits the boxes tend to tilt and jam. In order to avoid this so-called drawer effect, it is proposed to arrange locking devices between the boxes in the extension direction and blocking members between the boxes in the push-in direction. The locking devices and blocking members ensure that, with the exception of one end box, a box can only be tightened when it has been unlocked from the previously extended box at the end of its extension travel and that, with the exception of the other end box, a box can only be pushed in when it has been released from the previously pushed-in box at the end of its push-in travel. Each box is thereby always connected to the guideway end or the slide in such a way that it is held in parallel in a positive manner.
