Carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide is separated from a gaseous mixture, e.g. coke oven gas or ammonia synthesis gas, by an absorption-desorption process using an alkaline solution containing an aminoacid added as such or in the form of a protein, the amount of alkali present being at least 1.5 times the stoichiometric amount necessary to form a salt of the aminoacid. Absorption is preferably carried out under pressure, e.g. 12 atmospheres, and at elevated temperature, e.g. 75 DEG C. Regeneration may be effected by passing hot air or steam through the solution maintained at a temperature below its b.p. The alkaline solution may contain sodium, potassium or ammonium carbonate, phosphate, borate, arsenite or phenate or an ethanolamine. Aminoacids specified are glycin, alanine, taurine, proline and glutammic, aminobenzoic, aminonaphthenic and aminophenolic acid. Proteins specified are albumins, gelatins, animal glue, casein and h moglobin. Boric acid, silicic acid, inorganic and organic salts of zinc, selenium, tellurium, aluminium and trivalent arsenic act as synergistic agents. Specifications 391,780 and 391,786 are referred to. |
