PURPOSE:To easily and quickly produce a tapered wire having good surface smoothness by passing an iron or steel wire through an electrolytic polishing liquid and executing electrolytic polishing by program-controlling the speed at which the iron or steel wire passes through he electrolytic polishing liquid and electrolyzing conditions. CONSTITUTION:The iron or steel wire 1 un-wound from a roll 2 is successively passed through a degreasing tank 3, the 1st rinsing tank 4, an electrolytic polishing liquid tank 5, the 2nd rinsing tank 6 and a rust preventive treatment tank 7 by guide rollers 15, 15... and is taken up on a take-up roller 8. Counter electrodes 13 immersed in the electrolyte 5a in the above-mentioned electrolytic polishing liquid tank 5 are disposed to face the iron or steel wire 1 and are connected via an ammeter 11 to a negative electrode of a DC power source 12. On the other hand, the positive electrode of the DC power source 12 is connected via a connector 14 to the iron or steel wire 1. The iron or steel wire 1 is subjected to electrolytic polishing together with chemical polishing in the electrolytic polishing liquid 5a. The speed of the iron or steel wire 1 and electrolyzing conditions are program-controlled by a program controller 9 by which the tapered with shown in the figure is formed.
