The mechanism is intended for straight or chamfer-cutting of, or chamfering the end of, a plastic pipe. A guide strap is secured around the pipe in a plane at right angles to its axis and a frame, movable along the strap around the pipe, carries a driven milling tool or the like which operates on one side of the strap. This tool is radially movable on guide rods fixed to the frame such that, after penetration to the required depth movement of the frame around the pipe produces the desired cut (or groove). The mechanism permits cutting pipe lengths or chamfering pipe ends in situ during pipe laying operations.
