<p>The wingsail (12) has a symmetrical element with a region of principal strength at the leading edge (11) which is mounted in the craft by a bearing at the bottom of the sail. The bearing defines an axis of pivot (17) of the sail, which is arranged to pass through the centre of the pressure zone. The axis is intersected by at least a part of the region of principal strength at a point at which the sail is to be attached to the bearing so that the latter will be attached at a point of maximum strength. A balancing mass can be mounted on a boom attached to the wingsail. A locating pair of wire stays (23,24) can act on opposite sides of the balancing mass, to locate the latter in a horizontal plane.</p> |
