Device for automatically loading a graphite tubular furnace (10) in an atomic absorption spectrometer which has a sample carrier (13) to be introduced into the furnace in the axial direction (11) and which is characterised in that, outside the cylindrical chamber region containing the furnace chamber, there is provided a supporting device (12) for the sample carrier (13), in which the sample carrier (13) is aligned with its longitudinal axis (14) parallel to the furnace axis (11), in that a probe carrier (13) gripper tool (17) is provided which can be moved controllably in two spatial coordinates, in that there is provided for the gripper tool (17) a drive (19, 21) and guide system (16, 18, 20) which moves the gripper tool along an approximately U-shaped movement track (23) between supporting device (12) and furnace chamber (15), and in that a program generator (22) is provided which controls the gripping function and the movement sequence of the gripper tool. <IMAGE>
