Control means (St) required, in order to restrict the rinsing cycles (B1, B2, B3) of a washing machine to the necessary amount, measurement values from a measuring device (M) which are representative of, among other things, the quantity of laundry. These measurement values are determined, if possible, by the use of components of a washing machine which are present in any case, from the rate of rise in temperature of a preceding program segment (A), in which the washing liquor is heated. <IMAGE>
