PURPOSE:To obtain a high display contrast to make the display easy to see by using a light source adapted to a wavelength of good display contrast on a supertwist panel. CONSTITUTION:In a supertwist panel 1, liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates are twisted at 160 deg.-330 deg.. The transmittance for lighting of the display on the supertwist panel 1 and that for non- lighting are different by wavelength. A light emitting diode having one peak of intensity due to the wavelength of emitted light is used as a light source 2, and the center wavelength of the spectrum of the light is allowed to coincide with the wavelength for the highest ratio of transmittance for lighting of the supertwist panel 1 to that for non-lighting, namely, the highest contrast. Since only the light having the wavelength of high contrast is used for the display on the supertwist panel 1, a high contrast is attained. |
