The revolutions of the beam (2) and the running-on yarn length are counted continuously. The product of the count values is filed continuously in a memory (21) for the first roll produced and is entered continuously in a comparator (19) during the production of the remaining rolls. The memory (21) is connected to the comparator (19) during the production of the second and all following rolls. In the comparator (19), the stored products are then compared continuously with the products newly obtained continuously. A difference obtained during the comparison of the products is displayed continuously. An attendant or an automatically working device (45) then acts in a controlling manner on the yarn brakes of the yarns to be wound, on the press-down devices (10, 11) of a press-down cylinder (9) pressing the roll and/or on the speed-determining device (4) of a prime mover (3) driving the beam (2), to the effect that the difference displayed or determined by the comparator (19) remains within predetermined tolerance limits or becomes zero. <IMAGE>
