PURPOSE:Sliced whale skins (containing the fat layer) are dipped in a dilute aqueous solution of a strong alkali, then in an aqueous solution of sodium hyposulfite, and in a dilute weak-acid solution, then boiled and washed with water to make exposed whale skins of high quality. CONSTITUTION:Sliced whale skins are dipped in a dilute aqueous solution of a strong alkali such as potassium or sodium tertiary phosphate or potassium hydroxide for 5-15hr and dipped in a dilute aqueous solution of sodium hyposulfite for 3-24hr to effect bleaching. Then, the resultant whale skins are dipped in a dilute aqueous solution containing metaphosphoric acid, crystalline citric acid, crystalline alum and an organic acid in a proportion of 43%, 10%, 20% and 27% for 30-60min, boiled at 50-80 deg.C for 30-60sec, washed with water, and cooled to give the final product. |
