Process for the preparation of novel sodium salts of prostaglandin derivatives

Sodium salts of prostaglandin derivatives of the formula I <IMAGE> are prepared by hydrolysing a corresponding methyl ester with an equivalent amount of sodium hydroxide. The corresponding methyl esters are obtainable by reaction of an iodo compound of the formula V <IMAGE> with a dehydroiodinating reagent. In the sodium salts of the formula I and the iodo compounds of the formula V, the substituents have the meaning given in Patent Claim 1. The sodium salts of the formula I frequently have a longer activity and higher selectivity than previously known prostaglandin derivatives. On account of their good solubility, they are also particularly suitable for the formulation of pharmaceutical preparations which can be administered orally.
