<p>A distributed data processing system included a plurality of user stations (4) for servicing users, each of which has its own processor (100), input/output device (128), and memory (112) by which information supplied by a user may be processed pursuant to applications programs and the resultant delivered to the user, a plurality of data centers (8) for storing data to be processed by the user stations, and a network for couplings (12) each user station to one or more of the data centers. Each data center (8) includes its own processor (200) and mass storage device for storing data of common interest to two or more of the user stations. The user stations (4) and the data centers (8) may communicate, but user stations generally may not communicate with other user stations and data centers may not communicate with other data centers. The network facilitates (12) coupling a user station directly to a data center and, if desired, coupling a user station via a modem to a telephone switching network (16) so that the user station may access a remote data center.</p> |
