Method of colouring the surface of a heat resistant material is claimed. Colloidal alumina is applied, dried and sintered at 208-1200≦̸C for 15-60 mins. to form an adsorptive porous activated layer. A transfer material comprising a carrier sheet and a releasable design layer contg. heat diffusible colourants is applied then the carrier sheet is stripped away to leave the design layer adhered to the adsorptive porous layer. Heating at 100-250≦̸C for 1-60 mins. causes the design layer to migrate into the adsorptive porous layer to become fixed. Finally, remnants of the transfer material are removed.
