PURPOSE:To produce a polyolefin havng a uniform sulfonation degree and a hydrophilic surface, by dispersing a polyolefin fiber (powder) in an SO3-containing organic solvent, reacting them, and simultaneously effecting the neutralization of the mixture with an alkali solution and the removal of an organic solvent from the mixture. CONSTITUTION:About 0.1-5% SO3 is dissolved in a normally liquid halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent (preferably, one having a b.p. of below about 100 deg.C, e.g., methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride). In the resulting solution, polyolefin fiber (or powder) is added and sulfonated under agitation. Then, the polyolefin fiber separated from the reaction solution is placed in an aqueous alkali solution (e.g., a 2-10% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide), heated to above about 60 deg.C under agitation, and neutralized and completely stripped of the solvent remaining in the fiber to obtain a hydrophilic polyolefin fiber. |
