PURPOSE:To improve cell performance, especially in a range of large current density, of a fuel cell, by arranging water repellent quality in the side of an air electrode larger than in a fuel electrode to increase gas diffusibility. CONSTITUTION:A fuel electrode 2 and air electrode 1 treated with catalytic layers 9 are arranged at a face-to-face position by interposing a matrix 5. This air electrode 1 is processed to be more water repellent than the electrode 2. An electrolyte of phosphoric acid or the like is contained in the both electrodes 1, 2, if air and fuel are caused to flow respectively in gas flow passages 3, 4, a hydrogen molecule 12, oxygen molecule 13 and nitrogen molecule 14 are diffused in fine holes 10, 11 to reach the layer 9 and generate electric power. In this construction, the electrolyte in a fuel cell can be suitably distributed to improve cell performance. While if the electrode 2 is arranged to be in the upper side, performance can be further improved. |
