PURPOSE:The dehydration of a tertiary alcohol of 4-5 carbon stoms is conducted in the presence of an oxyacid of boron and water with heating to produce an olifin suitably used in the preparation of oxo alcohols in high yield with no formation of by-products. CONSTITUTION:A tertiary alcohol of formula I (R<1> is H, methyl) is heated in the presence of water and an oxyacid of boron or boron compound convertible to the oxyacid under the reaction conditions to form an olefin of formula II (Either R<2> or R<3> is H is and the rest is H or tert. butyl when R<1> is H, when R<1> is methyl the rest is methyl). The amount of the catalyst is 0.05-2.0 moles per mole of the tertiary alcohol calculated as boric acid. The amount of water is preferably less than 200wt% based on the alcohol. Further the main product changes to diisobutene when the tertiary alcohol is heated over 170 deg.C. |
