The internal combustion engine has at least one cylinder (1), in which a piston (33) acting on a crankshaft (9) can slide. An inlet valve arrangement (73) and an outlet valve arrangement (75) are opened together during the charge cycle between each compression stroke and each combustion or working stroke over a predetermined crankshaft angle of rotation. In the exhaust path (77, 79) of the exhaust valave arrangement (75) an intake device (93, 95), prefereably designed as a turbine, is arranged. By means of the intake device the fresh air fraction of the charge introduced can be reduced in idling and in the partial load range and a richer mixture with improved ignition characteristics achieved. <IMAGE>
