In the event of the current collector (2) jumping or in the event of another disconnection of the power system, the intermediate circuit voltage produces a voltage peak which is higher than the maximum power system voltage and which then fires for example a starter gap (5) of an overvoltage arrester or semiconductor in series with the damping resistor (R). At each voltage zero crossover the device switches itself off and can therefore be of very simple design.
