The invention relates to an internal combustion engine for vehicles, especially to a diesel internal combustion engine, which is equipped with an exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional, mechanically driven supercharger. In order to achieve a favourable torque and power output characteristic of the internal combustion engine, and to obviate the need for a charging pressure-related reduction of the full load fuel quantity, it is proposed that the supercharger (14) mechanically driven by the internal combustion engine (1) be automatically switched in by way of a controllable coupling (15) essentially only when the speed of the internal combustion engine lies below the efficient working range of the turbocharger (2) and the load of the internal combustion engine lies in the range close to full load. In addiiton the mechanical supercharger can also be switched in when the internal combustion engine is idling. <IMAGE>
