The invention relates to a device for the protection of small children at workplaces, in particular on electric cookers and work surfaces with cooking areas. With the device, the intention is that both free access for an operating person for a workplace is to be ensured and access to this workplace for children is to be prevented. This is achieved by a heatable safety rail arranged on the operating side of the workplace. Small children are deterred by the surface temperature of the safety rail without suffering burn injuries. The temperature level necessary can be achieved by suitable selection of an electric heating resistance. Free access for activities to be performed is afforded as a mechanical protection of the workplace against unauthorised access by small children is not present.
