The invention relates to an arrangement and a process to heat the bottom blast in a blast furnace. In contrast to the blast heaters hitherto used here in the form of vertical towers in which the heating up of the storage unit and the heating of the blast gases took place, regenerators (10,11,12) are used which are acted on horizontally and surrounded on all sides with a metallic cladding; the horizontal flow through their storage bodies (32) is in one direction in the gas (on gas) stage, and in the opposite direction in the blowing stage (on blast). A plurality of regenerators (10,11,12), which can be switched in parallel, are present; recuperators (46,47,48), which can likewise be switched in parallel, provide for heat exchange between the regenerator exhaust gases and the bottom blast to be preheated. Lower exhaust gas temperatures, and higher temperatures for the bottom blast, are achieved. <IMAGE>
