An optical fibre submarine cable comprises an optical fibre package loosely housed in a water-blocked aluminium split tube. First and second layers of tensile strength elements are applied with opposite lays around the tube, the outer layer comprising between twenty five and forty elements and the inner layer comprising between ten and twenty elements of larger size than the outer layer, such that a crush resistant tortionally balanced core results. |
