A CuS cathode is produced by dispersing elemental copper and sulfur in an aqueous HCl solution free of ionic contaminants; washing the resulting cupric sulfide to remove cuprous chloride and then with water until the chloride ion content of the wash water is less than 5 ppm. The washed solid product is then dried to remove any residual HCl, NH4OH, NH3 and NH4Cl, pressed to form a shape retaining cathode, and preferably subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature of 200 DEG C or greater. The CuS electrode is incorporated in a cell or battery having a lithium metal anode and a non- aqueous electrolyte all contained in a crimped stainless steel case. |
