A fastener assembly for fastening an exterior sheet or cladding (4) covering a layer of insulation material (6) comprises a spacer (22) of a deformable plastics material in the form of a tubular body and a screw having a head (10) and a shank (8). The spacer consists of a first portion (24) extending from a first end of the body to an intermediate location (28) along the length of the body, and a second portion (26) extending from the intermediate location (28) to a second end of the body. The first portion (24) is cylindrical and circumferentially continuous and the second portion (26) has an external circumferential groove (36) adjacent the second end and is divided by slots (34) into a plurality of fingers (32) extending from the intermediate location (28) to the second end. The shank (8) of the screw comprises in succession away from the head (10), a larger diameter portion (14), a smaller diameter portion (16), and an intermediate diameter portion (17). The intermediate diameter portion (17) has on it a thread (18) with a thread cutting leading part, and the larger diameter portion (14) is joined to the smaller diameter portion (16) by a taper (15). The combined length of the intermediate (17) and smaller diameter (16) portions of the shank (8) is greater than the length of the spacer (22). |
