Title compds. I X,Y = H, halo, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halo-lower alkyl, phenoxy, phenyl, CN; R = H, R1CH2- (R1 = H, C1-4 alkyl), useful as plant growth regulants, were prepared by reacting a spiro compd. (II) with hydroxy compd. (III) under acidic conditions at room temp.-reflux temp. of III. Thus, 4-biphenylyl-carboxaldehyde chloro oxime 34.8 g and 3-methylene-phthalide 14.6 g dissolved in ether 450 ml were stirred with triethylamine 15.18 g to give 3'-(3-biphenylyl)-spiro isobenzofuran-1(3H), 5'(4'H)-isooxazol-3-one(m.p. 170-172≰C; decomposition).
