PURPOSE:To decide whether characters are written longitudinally or laterally, by comparing the longitudinal coorelation between picture elements with the lateral correlation. CONSTITUTION:A reader 202 performs a raster scan on an original 201 to generate a level 0 for white and a level 1 for black through photoelectric conversion, and the resulting picture information 203 is stored in a picture information memory 204. A lateral OR circuit 205 and a longitudinal OR circuit 209 read one row and one column of picture information out of the memory 204 respectively to OR black elements of every block of a prescribed number of picture elements divided by the indication of a decision part 206, and the results are stored in a lateral block information memory 207 and a longitudinal block information memory 210. The numbers of blocks when the circuits 205 and 209 generate AND outputs with the level 1 are counted by a lateral count memory 208 and a lateral count memory 211 and stored therein. The decision part 206 finds the ratio R between the counted values of the memories 208 and 211 to vary the number of picture elements and performs said process repeatedly, thereby deciding characters are written longitudinally when 1-R>alpha(alpha=constant) and laterally when 1-R<alpha.
|
