PURPOSE:To attain correct character recognition of partially superposed or contacted characters, by resegmenting a partial pattern corresponding to the reference character size from the leading and final ends of an unrecognized character pattern to recognize the correct character. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal S3 from a scanner 1 is digitalized and stored in a picture memory 9. A character pattern signal S17 read out from the picture memory 9 is recognized at its character by a character recognizing circuit 14. When the character recognition is impossible, the character recognizing circuit 14 stores the input pattern to pattern memories A16, B17. A resegmenting circuit 18 reads out a character pattern in the character pattern memory A16 by the reference character size from the leading end of a character pattern and inputs the read-out characters to a character recognizing circuit 14 to recognize the characters again. Subsequently, the resegmenting circuit 18 reads out characters in the character pattern memory B17 by the reference character size from the final end of the character pattern to make the character recognizing circuit 14 recognize the characters. |
