NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R<1> is H, amino-protecting group or acyl; R<2> is (substituted of protected) imidazolyl; R<3> is (protected) carboxyl or carboxylato] and its salt. EXAMPLE:An intramolecular salt of 7-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-(Z)-methoxyimi noacetamido]-3-[1-methyl-2-( 1-cyclopropylmethyl-3-pyridinio-1H-imidazolyl)]-DELTA<3>- cephem-4-carboxylic acid. USE:An antibacterial agent exhibiting excellent antibacterial activity against bacterial strains resistant to penicillin and cephalosporin. It has low toxicity. PREPARATION:The starting compound of formula II [R<3a> is (protected) COOH; R<5> is R<1> except for H; R<7> is H, etc.] is halogenated and then oxidized with dimethyl sulfoxide. The produced compound of formula III is cyclized and the resultant compound of formula IV (R<2a> is alkyl, etc.) is oxidized. The objective compound is obtained by reducing the obtained compound of formula V.
