Novel, graphical techniques and new techniques for colour design using flat-bed chromatography techniques are described, colorants being distributed on the sorption surface before, during or after the development with solvents in such a manner that the ratio of the surface covered by colorants to the complete surface after the distribution is 1:20 to 1:1 and that shape and/or colour compositions are formed by the action of the solvents. Preferably, during this, the colorants are introduced into the sorption surface in such a manner that they are reached by the solvent front at different points in time. Special effects can be obtained by applying the mixture to be separated over a large surface and in the form of geometrical figures, by carrying out multiple development, which can also take place in a plurality of directions and by breaking or partly removing the originally homogeneous sorption layer, or by selectively changing the characteristics of the layer of sorbent by the addition of components insoluble in the solvent. The shape and colour compositions thus obtained can be used, for example, as decorative elements or for artistic creations in their own right.
