The essential characteristic of this transmission is a plurality of gear pumps driven by the engine. These are connected by the pressure line to the hydraulic drive on the vehicle axle. Should a gear pump press the drive fluid onto the pressure line it acts non-positively, but if the fluid flows ineffectively back into the intake line this results in idling on the pump in question. The drive fluid is controlled by way of a switch system. The more pumps press the drive fluid onto the pressure line, the faster the drive is forced to turn. The number of pumps corresponds to the number of speed stages. So that a vehicle can travel and be braked in reverse, the intake and pressure line lead by way of a rotary switch. Depending on the setting, the rotary switch can block the drive fluid (vehicle braking) or shift in the reverse direction (reverse gear). The hydraulic brake system can also be used separately in the case of other types of transmission.
