A method and an arrangement are specified for the overload protection of machines, in particular winning and conveying installations in mining, a switching action being triggered in the event of an overload, by means of which switching action the transmission train to the working machine is interrupted and/or the drive machine is stopped and if need be a brake device is operated. The actual speed value of the drive machine is used as a measured value when determining an overload, and a switching signal triggering the switching action is generated as a function of a predetermined speed drop and/or a predetermined rate of speed change during decreasing speed. The speed can be recorded as a measured value with especially simple and operationally reliable means and can likewise be electrically processed in a simple manner.
