The invention relates to a process for operating a recording unit working by the vacuum method and having a plurality of nozzle channels (D) which are connected via a common distributor (V) to a supply container (F) for a recording fluid (T). The drying up of recording fluid (T) in the region of the nozzle-channel orifices is prevented by using non-hygroscopic recording fluids (T) and by exposing the nozzle channels (D) in recording intermissions to an overpressure which causes the recording fluid (T) to flow out of all the nozzle-channel orifices slightly, with the effect of preventing it from drying up in the region of the nozzle-channel orifices. The process according to the invention can be employed particularly for the labelling of mass-produced articles. <IMAGE>
