There is a drum, in which a kettle (1) is covered on one side by an annular cover (2) which surrounds a cut-out hole (5). In this connection, it is desirable that the sound of the drum is changed while preserving the typical drum sound type. This is achieved by the annular cover (2) being made of a material which is as rigid as the kettle (1) and being located firmly on the kettle, and the annular cover (2), seen in the direction of the central axis, being curved outwards (6). Associated with this is a considerable change in the sound type, the sound being drier, more fulminating and softer. <IMAGE>
