PURPOSE:To improve the display life and to eliminate color shading in the display electrode by fabricating the counter electrode placed opposite to the display electrode with a dielectric region at least part of which faces to the display electrode and an electric conductor region contacting with the dielectric region. CONSTITUTION:A display electrode 12 having a prescribed pattern is formed on one transparent substrate 10 of an electrochromic display element. A uniform electrically conductive film 15 is formed on the other transparent substrate 10, a dielectric film 16 is formed on the film 15 in a region opposite to the electrode 12, and a counter electrode 17 is fabricated with the films 16, 15. When potential necessary for color development at the side of the electrode 12 is applied between the electrodes 12, 17, electric current flows scarcely after the developed color density is made uniform, so the deterioration of the counter electrode due to repeated use and an electrode reaction due to a side reaction are inhibited, the display life can be improved, and color shading is hardly caused between the segments. |
