An apparatus for removing light liquid, for example oil or benzene, from water is composed of a vessel having a filter packing of filter material having in particular coalescent action, through which water flows from top to bottom and is operated so that on the surface of the liquid stacked up to the height of the filter packing or above, in the vessel a continuous floating layer collects of the separated light liquid, into which the water is introduced. A float closure, the float of which is arranged in a float chamber communicating with the floating layer via perforations, in particular a sieve cloth, blocks the discharge of the purified water when the floating layer reaches a preset thickness.
