PURPOSE:To obtain a reinforced optical fiber which assures long-term reliability even when used in a bent state by forming covering layer on the outside circumference of an optical fiber and a reinforced covering layer wherein thermosetting resins are impregnated with fiber materials and are allowed to cure successively in specific forms. CONSTITUTION:A reinforced optical fiber consists of an optical fiber 1 formed with covering layers which consist of a primary coat 2 and a buffer coat 3 and contain no reinforcing fibers and a reinforced covering layer 4 formed on the outside circumference thereof. The layer 4 is formed of plural reinforcing fiber materials 5, 5, 5,- and thermosetting resins 6 impregnated therewith the allowed to cure. Long fibers and short fibers can be used in combination for the fiber materials 5, 5, 5,-. The contents of the materials 5, 5, 5,- in the layer 4 are 60-85wt% and the thickness of the layer 4 is within a 100-2,500mum range. The optical fiber is so formed that the ratio of the outside diameter, defined as (d), of the layer 4 to the thickness thereof attains d/t>2.0. |
