PURPOSE:To provide luminous appearance and to improve the display characteristics by sealing a liq. crystal layer contg. a fluorescent dye in the gap between 2 sheets of transparent medium having a lower refractive index than the liq. crystal to utilize the optical amplifying effect of the dye. CONSTITUTION:A common electrode 3 and an electrode 4 for an image element are formed on the surfaces of transparent substrates 5' and covered with 2 sheets of transparent medium 8 such as polytetrafluoroethylene having >=0.1mum thickness and a lower refractive index than a liq. crystal. The substrates 5' are then placed opposite to each other with the medium 8 inward and a spacer 6 and a reflecting plate 7 inbetween, and a liq. crystal layer 1' contg. a fluorescent dye is sealed in the gap between the substrates. Thus, a light scattering type liq. crystal display device with high resolution and high contrast is obtd.
