Sulphur is produced by the interaction of hydrogen sulphide and oxygen at a temperature of 175 DEG -700 DEG C., preferably 200 DEG -400 DEG C., in the presence of a crystalline aluminosilicate having a zeolite structure as catalyst, said alumino-silicate having uniform interstitial dimensions of 5-13 angstrom units, preferably 10-13 angstrom units. The aluminosilicate may be of the "A" or "X" molecular sieve series. Metal cations specified are sodium, lithium, ammonium, silver, calcium, strontium, magnesium, zinc, nickel, and cobalt. 80-110% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen is preferably employed. The hydrogen sulphide may be oxidized in the form of hydrogen sulphide-containing natural gas, petroleum refinery fuel gas, hydrogen recycle gas, or gas from the manufacture of carbon disulphide by the interaction of sulphur and methane. The oxygen may be substantially pure or in the form of air. The space velocity may be 1,000-100,000 volumes of gas/hour/unit volume of catalyst/hour. The aluminosilicate may be in the form of finely divided powder or pellets of 1/16 -/ba1/8 inch diameter bound with clay. |
