The apparatus has a screwing head (10) which takes hold of the screw-on lid (23) and screws it onto the fixedly held container (22) by means of a rotary and advancing movement. To bring about the rotary drive of the screwing head, a hydraulically or pneumatically operated motor (9) is provided which is directly coupled to the screwing head. This solution has the advantage over driving by means of electric motor with a sliding clutch that the torque on the screw-on lid can be kept constant over a relatively long operating period more effectively and can be altered as required without interrupting operation. To take hold of and retain the screw-on lid (23), the screwing head (10) has a suction plate (16) instead of gripping pliers, which plate (16) permits the screw-on lids to be fed in a less mechanically laborious fashion. <IMAGE>
